- The interdisciplinary nature of the Physiological Sciences Graduate Program is reflected in the involvement of over 50 faculty members from 19 departments in basic and clinical sciences at the University of Arizona, located in beautiful Tucson, Arizona. The program offers a breadth of research opportunities for students that span from the molecular and cellular to the systems levels of physiology. Students begin their research education in Physiological Sciences with laboratory rotations that are matched to their potential fields of interest in order to identify a project and faculty advisor for their research project.
- The Department of Physiology's teaching role in the medical program serves to instruct students during their pre-clinical years in the normal function of organ systems of the body. Integration from the molecular to cellular to system levels is addressed with multiple teaching formats of lecture, small groups, and large group discussions. The eight Physiology faculty with primary medical teaching responsibilities have developed and strengthened interdisciplinary teaching collaborations with other disciplines such as Biochemistry and Pharmacology, with clinical departments such as Respiratory Sciences, Pediatrics, and Cardiology, and with community physicians. In addition to classroom teaching, physiology faculty participate in clinical research, with a particular emphasis to further develop translational research, and mentoring of medical students interested in research.
